Summer Road Trip Safety Tips

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has just published a consumer advisory notice encouraging motorists to take precautions before heading out for summer road trips. In addition to calling on motorists to make sure their cars are fully serviced and ready to hit the road, the NHTSA is also encouraging drivers to make safe choices on the road.

Routine Maintenance For Safe Driving

Making sure your car is properly maintained is an important part of road trip preparedness. The last thing you need is to be stranded on the side of the road in the summer heat. Depending upon your car’s maintenance history, it could be time for a full tune up, oil change and battery check. Don’t forget about the tires either. It might be a good idea to have them rotated before the trip, and always make sure they’re properly inflated.

Safe Road Trip Driving

In addition to routine maintenance issues, safe driving habits are also essential for a safe and happy summer road trip. It’s important to note that distracted and impaired driving puts everybody on the road at risk, and while you certainly have control over your own driving habits, other drivers may not be as responsible. Buckling up, for every trip, no matter how far you’re going, will be the single most effective way to protect yourself in the event of an accident. Listed below are the NHTSA’s Summer Road Trip Safety Tips.

NHTSA Summer Safety Tips

  • Make sure your car is up-to-date on regular maintenance, including tires.
  • Never drink and drive. Even one drink can be one drink too many.
  • Buckle seat belts for every trip, no matter how far you’re driving.
  • Protect child passengers by always making sure they are secured in age and size-appropriate safety seats.
  • Avoid distractions by putting the phones down and focusing on the road.
  • Observe “Move Over” laws to help keep stranded motorists and first responders safe.

If You’re Injured in an Car Accident

With school letting out and weather hopefully turning around shortly, Texoma families will likely be taking to the road for fun family vacations. Even with the pre-trip maintenance and safe driving habits, it’s still possible to get injured in a car accident. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident, contact the skilled team at the Altman Legal Group at 940-761-4000 for a free consultation today.

Flood Damage in Wichita Falls and Texoma

On Monday, an additional 24 counties across Texas were declared in a state of disaster. A few of the Texoma counties hardest hit were Wichita, Archer, Henderson, Caldwell, Clay, Denton and Wilson. The recent heavy rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding has ravaged the state and caused considerable flood damage in our own home town, Wichita Falls, where the Red Cross has been assisting flood victims all week.

Flood Damage in Wichita County Neighborhoods

Residents in various Wichita Falls neighborhoods have been dealing with flood damage this week. KFDX News Channel Three reports that approximately 25 homes in the Wranglers Retreat and Horseshoe Bend neighborhoods have been flooded. Officials with Oncor have been out assessing the damage and working to restore power to customers. The Sheriff’s office is asking residents to be patient as the process could take time. Some evacuated residents were expected to be able to return to their homes this past Monday.

Flood Insurance: Need to Know

Unfortunately, standard homeowners insurance policies don’t typically cover flood damage. In most cases, you will need to have additional separate polices to have coverage for disasters like floods and earthquakes. It’s also important to note that not all water damage is created equal in the eyes of your insurance provider. For example, your insurance company may view water damage from a storm and water damage from a flood differently. Additionally, even homes in non-floodplain areas can sustain water and flood damage.

After a Flood

We would all like to think that our insurance companies are looking out for us, or that we’re in “good hands,” but that’s just not always the case. In fact, many times, insurance companies are looking out for their own bottom line and shareholder profits rather than the wellbeing of their policyholders.

If you think your insurance company is acting in bad faith or treating you unfairly, contact the skilled team at the Altman Legal Group at 940-761-4000 for a free consultation. Our experienced lawyers can help you file a claim with your insurance company. You don’t have to go through this alone. Residents in Wranglers Retreats and Horseshoe Bend neighborhoods or any other impacted areas can call our team for experienced claim help.

Bicyclist Struck on Sheppard Access Road

Earlier this week, a bicyclist was struck and injured by a driver in Wichita Falls. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the collision happened on Sheppard Access Road, around lunchtime. Although very few details about the crash have been released, we do know that 39-year-old Rodney Dewayne Hill was arrested after hitting the bicycle rider. The cyclist suffered from injuries to the leg.

Driver Who Hit Cyclist Arrested

Apparently, the driver involved, Rodney Dewayne Hill, had three outstanding warrants in Wichita Falls at the time of the collision. He was also driving without a license. We haven’t heard if any additional charges or citations have been made in connection with this particular crash though.

Cyclist Injured on Sheppard Access Road

There’s no word on the cyclist’s current condition or the full extent of his or her injuries. Also, that person’s name has not yet been released. At this time, we don’t know how or why Hill struck the cyclist on Sheppard Access Road. Could it have been a case of distracted or impaired driving? This collision may still be under investigation with local law enforcement authorities.

Bicycle Accidents in Texoma

Although we typically hear the term “bicycle accident” after somebody has been hit by a driver, it’s important to remember that most collisions are not accidental occurrences at all. These so-called “accidents” are usually caused by the negligence, carelessness or willfully dangerous behavior of one person or another. That’s why it’s so important to have thorough crash scene investigations. Your lawyer can stay on top of investigative developments as you recover. Whether you were injured in a car wreck or a bicycle collision, it’s critical to note that most traffic-crash injuries and deaths are totally preventable. Holding negligent, careless and dangerous drivers accountable is an important step in improving roadway safety in Wichita Falls and across the Nation.

When to Call a Personal Injury Lawyer

After any kind of injury crash, it’s a good idea to speak with an experienced personal injury lawyer. Insurance companies aren’t always easy to deal with, and you might be stuck in the hospital recovering from your injuries. If a dangerous driver has injured you or a cyclist you love, contact the skilled lawyers at the Altman Legal Group at 940-761-4000 for an immediate free case consultation.

The team at the Altman Legal Group wishes the injured cyclist a full and swift recovery.

Failure to Yield Crash on Highway 49

Over the weekend, a failure to yield crash in Medicine Park, Oklahoma sent two people to the hospital. According to KSWO ABC News Channel Seven, the wreck happened sometime before 2:00 p.m. on Highway 49, in front of Fisherman’s Cove. Apparently, the driver of a silver Toyota failed to yield when turning onto Highway 49. A westbound Mustang then crashed into the Toyota and the vehicle spun around. The airbags in the Toyota did not deploy, and the driver was unresponsive on the scene. That person and a passenger in the Mustang were transported to Comanche County Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Failure to Yield Crash in Oklahoma

At this time, there’s no word on either person’s current condition or the extent of their injuries. Also, no information has been released about citations involved, or if the cause of the wreck is still under investigation with local law enforcement authorities. Where failure-to-yield crashes are concerned, it’s common to see citations following the wreck, especially if law enforcement officers were able to thoroughly investigate and reconstruct the crash scene.

Causes of Failure to Yield Accidents

Three major contributors to failure to yield crashes are distracted driving, aggressive driving and drunk driving. Properly and safely yielding is an important part of roadway safety. If motorists are paying attention and following the rules of the road, they should have no problem yielding in the right situations. Listed below are some common types of accidents arising from failing to yield.

Common Failure to Yield Accidents

  • Failure to yield when making a left turn
  • Failure to yield at a crosswalk
  • Failure to yield to a bicyclist or pedestrian
  • Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle
  • Failure to yield while merging

Memorial Day Weekend Travel Safety

This year, an estimated 3 million Texans will take to the roadways during the Memorial Day weekend. According to the Times Record News, this will represent a five percent increase in holiday travel from last year, for people who are traveling 50 miles or more away from home. This year, Memorial Day weekend will run from Thursday, May 21 though Monday, May 25. With an increase in travelers taking to the roads, safe-distraction-free driving needs to be a top priority for motorists across the state.

Click It or Ticket

In addition to a commitment to distraction-free driving, motorists should also remember to buckle up, for every trip. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be participating in the annual seat belt safety campaign, “Click It or Ticket,” this month. The TxDOT will also be publicizing their 14th annual statewide public safety campaign from May 18 through the May 31. In addition to increased awareness, public safety officials will also be stepping up enforcement efforts to keep roadways safe.

Seat Belt Usage Facts

  • In 2013, there were 9,580 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes across the U.S.
  • In 2012, seat belts saved an estimated 12,174 lives.
  • From 2008 to 2012, seat belts saved nearly 63,000 lives.
  • In 2013, nearly half of all motor vehicle occupants who died in crashes were unrestrained.
  • Among young adults, between the ages of 18 and 34 years old, killed in crashes, 61 percent were completely unrestrained, the highest percentage of all age groups.

Holiday Weekend DUI Crash Prevention

As with many holiday weekends, the Memorial Day weekend may also involve a spike in drunk driving related car accidents. The NHTSA wants to remind motorists that buzzed driving is drunk driving. Even one drink can be one drink too many, so always designate a driver if you plan on celebrating the holiday weekend with alcohol.

If you or somebody you love has been injured in a car accident this Memorial Day weekend, or anytime of the year, contact the skilled team at the Altman Legal Group at 940-761-4000 for an immediate free consultation. Wichita Falls Traffic Superintendent Attacked by Dog

On Tuesday, Wichita Falls Traffic Superintendent Mark Beauchamp was attacked by a dog during a walk with his family. According to KFDX News Channel Three, Beauchamp, his wife and their dog, a Golden Retriever named Grace, were out for a stroll when a neighborhood dog escaped its yard and attacked them. Initially, the gray and white Australian Shepherd went for Beauchamp’s wife and dog. In trying to protect them, the dog attacked him and bit hit leg multiple times. Finally, the dog was called off by its owner.

Wichita Falls Dog Attack

Beauchamp recounted his experience for KFDX News Channel Three and said that once the dog had turned on him, he was mostly focused on trying to keep the dog away and not fall to the ground during the attack. This attack happened just before Beauchamp’s upcoming walking safety class at Jefferson Elementary. Unfortunately, the talk will have to be rescheduled as he recovers from his injuries. Beauchamp and his wife are thankful that the attack was not worse, and did not happen to one of the many elderly residents in their neighborhood. Making the most out of a bad situation, Beauchamp plans on using this dog attack as a teaching experience for future safety training classes.

Dog Bite Statistics

  • In 2001, an estimated 368,245 people were treated in U.S emergency departments for nonfatal dog bite-related injuries.
  • 42 percent of dog bites in 2001 occurred among children aged 14 years and younger.
  • The average cost of a dog bite-related hospital stay was $18,200.
  • There were four times as many dog bite-related emergency department visits and three times as many hospital stays in rural areas than in urban areas.

On Saturday night, a motorcyclist was struck and injured by an 18-year-old hit-and-run driver. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the incident happened just after 8:00 p.m. on Sheppard Access Road, near the Industrial Boulevard intersection. The motorcycle rider, 41-year-old James West, had to be flown to a Dallas area hospital for treatment of his injuries. He is now facing charges associated with the crash.

Motorcycle Wrecks in Texoma

Over the past few weeks, we’ve reported on several motorcycle wrecks across Texoma. In April, a multi-motorcycle wreck took the life of one rider and injured five others. The crash happened near Comanche and also involved a GMC Denali SUV. At the end of March, a drunk driver sent a female motorcycle rider to the hospital in Lawton. The driver involved was also in an SUV at the time of the wreck. The driver did not suffer from any injuries, but he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI).

U.S. Motorcycle Crash Statistics

  • In 2012, 4,957 motorcyclists were killed in crashes across the U.S.
  • In 2012, 428 motorcyclists were killed in Texas collisions.
  • Helmets are estimated to be 37-percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to riders.
  • The NHTSA estimates that helmets saved 1,699 motorcycle riders’ lives in 2012.

After an Accident

If you or somebody you love has been injured in a motorcycle accident due to somebody else’s negligent, careless or willfully dangerous behavior behind the wheel, you need to speak with an injury attorney. Recovering from a car or motorcycle accident can be a long and slow road. You could be out of work for an extended period of time with medical bills piling up. Whether you’ve been injured in an accident involving a drunk driver or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle accident, the sooner you speak with a personal injury attorney, the better.

At this time, we don’t know the extent of James West’s injuries or his current condition, but we do know that he suffered from serious leg injuries. The team at the Altman Legal Group wishes James West a full and swift recovery from his injuries.
