600 Crashes in Wichita Falls in 2016

A recent article out of the Times Record News highlights the disturbing report that more than 600 total car crashes in the City of Wichita Falls have occurred in the first quarter of 2016. In fact, the a report out of the Wichita Falls Traffic Safety Commission found 612 total automobile crashes recorded from January through March of this year. Many crashes happened at Kemp and Southwest Parkway. In the month of March, there were four collisions at Avenue Q and Kemp Boulevard alone. Of those crashes, 175 injuries were reported. At 6th and Austin Streets, traffic safety officials have added new safety features to the intersection. This was the first time in a decade that this particular intersection dropped off of the top 10 list of high-collision intersections.

Collisions Across Wichita Falls

On Monday morning, a one-vehicle sent at least four people to the hospital. That wreck occurred in a northbound lane of the Lloyd Ruby overpass. Although very few details about the wreck were released, we do know that traffic was backed up during rush hour traffic as crews and first responders worked the scene. In March, there were two traffic-crash fatalities in Wichita Falls. There was a fatal crash involving a motorcycle on Highway 79 and two-car crash at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Juarez.

GPS and Distracted Driving

A recent wreck involving a semi truck that turned in front of a bus could have been a case of distracted driving involving GPS technology. Apparently, this is becoming a recurring problem in one particular area. Drivers are listening to directions without making sure those directions are safe and accurate. The GPS tells the driver to “Turn Now,” and the driver turns without actually making sure it’s a safe and appropriate time and location to do so.
