Drinking Water Safety in North Texas

A community in North Texas has serious concerns about the safety of their drinking water, so WFAA ABC News Channel Eight conducted an investigative report. Residents in Chisholm Springs, an area just north of Fort Worth, have a problem with their drinking water. It smells foul and burns their skin when they shower in it. Complaints about the water have ranged from rashes and upset stomachs to shortness of breath, burns and headaches. Their water is dirty, smelly and undrinkable. After airing their initial investigative report about the water in Chisholm Springs, other residents in unincorporated areas in and around Tarrant County and the Barnett Shale area came forward with similar complaints.

Testing Water Samples in Chisholm Springs

Not only did the WFAA news team find very high chlorine levels in water tested in the Chisholm Springs community, An independent water quality expert, Zacariah Hildenbrand of Clear Environmental, along with a team of scientists from the University of Texas at Arlington found that in addition to over-chlorination, the minerals and metals in the water measured to nearly 1,100 parts per million (ppm), which is more than twice the federal limit for safe drinking water.

Aqua Texas Insists Water is Safe

Aqua Texas, the private ground water distribution company that services residents in Chisholm Springs and many other surrounding communities, has issued a statement defending their water quality, stating it “consistently meets all state and federal drinking water quality standards.” Residents got little help from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) too. Their investigators declared that all test results were within normal or safe ranges. Since the WFAA investigative report has aired, state officials have re-opened their investigation. At this time, residents still refuse to drink their smelly water.

Water Safety in Barnett Shale Region

Earlier this year, another WFAA investigation found what appeared to be numerous violations by drillers in the oil and natural gas extraction industry in the Barnett Shale area. These drillers were apparently ignoring mandates to properly seal wells with cement in order to protect precious groundwater. Since 2013, WFAA has found a pattern of fracking drillers failing to properly cement their natural gas wells. If you’re concerned about the safety of your drinking water or if you have suffered from some type of illness related to drinking your tap water, contact the team at the Altman Legal Group at 940-761-4000 for a free case consultation.

Crash in Baylor County Claims One Life

Earlier this week, one person was killed in a fiery one-car crash in Baylor County. According to the Times Record News, the wreck happened at about 3:30 p.m., on U.S. 283. The vehicle’s OnStar system alerted first responders, who rushed to the scene. Emergency responders arrived on the scene to find the car had left the roadway and caught fire. Paul Stephen McKeller, 68 years old of Midland, was killed in the wreck. This also happens to be the same area where two other wrecks have occurred within the last month.

Fiery Baylor County Crash

At this time, very few details about the fatal car crash have been released. We do not know what caused the crash or why the vehicle caught fire. Even in rollover crashes, it is unusual for a vehicle to just catch fire and burn. It may be necessary to conduct additional investigative efforts to determine what happened in this particular wreck. Cars and trucks are not supposed to just catch fire and burn, even if a vehicle overturns during the accident.

Jeep and Chrysler Safety Concerns

Although there has been no mention of the make or model car involved in the recent fatal crash in Baylor County, there have been safety concerns over Jeep and Chrysler vehicles exploding and catching fire recently. Earlier this year, The New York Times reported on the nearly 2.7 million Jeeps under recall for faulty gas tank design. At least 56 deaths have been linked with the exploding Jeep gas tanks. Currently, Fiat Chrysler has acknowledged settling more than 30 lawsuits involving exploding Jeep gas tanks. Concerns have also been raised about whether or not they are doing enough to make sure all of the defective Jeeps are getting repaired, and promptly.

Faulty and Defective Auto Parts

If you suspect a faulty or defective vehicle part caused your accident, you need to speak with a personal injury lawyer immediately. It’s also important to report any complaints or suspicions you might have to manufacturers and to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, so they can keep track of it. Don’t think that a defective part wasn’t to blame, just because your vehicle isn’t currently under recall. It can take months or years for recalls to be announced.

The team at the Altman Legal Group sends their deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Paul Stephen McKeller.

Flooring Linked With Cancer Causing Chemical

Lumber Liquidators is popular for a reason, they’re an affordable choice for homebuilders, contractors and homeowners shopping for flooring. Unfortunately, that good deal on laminate flooring could come at the cost of your family’s health.

Lumber Liquidators, the popular flooring retailer with locations nationwide, is under heat for selling flooring with potentially unsafe levels of the cancer-causing chemical formaldehyde. A recent investigative report by 60 Minutes revealed the disturbing news that much of the company’s Chinese-made laminate flooring could contain unsafe levels of the dangerous chemical formaldehyde. Initial estimates indicate that the tainted laminate flooring could be in hundreds of thousands of homes nationwide.

Results of Independent Lab Testing

Concern over the flooring has California homeowners ripping out their floors. They believe the Chinese-made laminate flooring is making them sick. With Denny Larson, executive director of Global Community Monitory, and Richard Drury, an environmental attorney, on the case, they had over 150 boxes of laminate flooring from a variety of different home improvement stores and flooring retailers tested.

The results were startling. Samples from Home Depot and Lowes had acceptable levels of formaldehyde, but every single sample of Chinese-made flooring from Lumber Liquidators failed to meet California Emission standards. Some samples were close to 20 times over the legal level.

Dangers Associated with Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a carcinogen, or cancer-causing chemical. At certain levels, it can also lead to chronic respiratory irritation, change in lung function, increased risk of asthma. Children and pregnant women are at an especially high risk when exposed to carcinogens. Initial symptoms of exposure can include a sore throat, burning and itching of the nasal passages and nasal congestion. At high levels, formaldehyde can cause myeloid leukemia and nasopharyngeal cancer.

Chinese Mills Implicated in Scam

During the investigative report, 60 Minutes found that three mills manufacturing Lumber Liquidators’ laminate flooring admitted to falsely labeling the flooring as meeting US emissions standards. This practice saves Lumber Liquidators 10 to 15 percent on manufacturing costs, and they pass the savings on to you. Meanwhile, they’re profit margin is doubling at an unprecedented rate, alerting those in the financial sector of possible foul play.

Chinese Formaldehyde Tainted Flooring is Cheaper

Lumber Liquidators needs to be held accountable for selling Chinese-made formaldehyde tainted flooring to consumers all over the country. Saving a buck at the expense of American health and lives is an unacceptable business practice.

The Dangers of Xarelto

Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a popular anticoagulant drug on the market right now. Unfortunately, it also has dangerous and severe life-threatening side effects. The blood-thinning drug, which was basically fast-tracked through the FDA approval process, and developed by Bayer, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, carries a risk of hemorrhaging and fatal bleeding events.

Blood Thinning Drugs Not One-Size-Fits-All

Unlike some other blood thinners and older, more well-established and well-researched drugs, Xarelto is given to patients as one uniform dose. The doctor doesn’t prescribe different dosages to different individuals. Sadly, with other dangerous drugs like Pradaxa on the market, it looks as though blood thinners are just not very safe when marketed as a one-size-fits-all drug.

Post-Surgical Prescription

Xarelto is typically given to patients following knee or hip replacement surgery. It’s prescribed to reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke in certain patients. Unfortunately, one of the most dangerous side effects of the drug is uncontrolled bleeding. Since the ability to clot is prevented, patients can actually bleed to death, and there’s no quick reversal agent for the drug.

Xarelto Side Effects and Warning Signs

The most dangerous side effect associated with Xarelto is a fatal bleeding event. It’s also possible to have fainting, itching, muscle spasms and allergic reactions to the blood-thinning drug. Additionally, patiets can have pools of blood to form within the body, which is also very dangerous. Listed below are a few warning signs to look out for.

Call Your Doctor Immediately if

  • You have unusual bleeding or bruising.
  • You have red or pink urine.
  • You have black or bloody stools.
  • You are coughing up blood or anything that looks like coffee grounds.
  • You have numbness or tingling in any part of your body.
  • You have heavy menstrual periods.
  • You have headaches, dizziness or weakness.

Patients Weren’t Properly Warned of Risks

Of course, very few drugs are totally without risk, but one of the problems with Xarelto and similarly dangerous blood-thinning drugs is the lack of proper warning given to patients. Patients have to be adequately warned of the risks involved with taking drugs, especially if they run the risk of having a fatal bleeding event. If you or a loved one has suffered from the dangerous side effects of Xarelto or similar drugs, contact a skilled personal injury attorney as soon as possible.

7.8 Million Cars Recalled for Defective Air Bags

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing the recall of 7.8 million cars due to defective air bags. Under certain conditions, the inflators on these particular air bags can explode and send shrapnel into the passenger compartment. According to NBC News, car owners in coastal and southern states are most at risk. High-risk areas include Florida, Puerto Rico, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana. A variety of models from manufacturers like Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and General Motors are all at risk.

Defective Inflators

Under normal circumstances, air bags save lives. The air bags in question are made by the Japanese company, Takata. The problem with these air bags involves the inflator. Under certain conditions, when the air bags should be deploying to save passenger vehicle occupants, the inflator is actually exploding. The explosion sends shrapnel into the cab and face and neck level. Even seemingly minor crashes can be deadly if the air bag inflators explode.

Deadly Takata Air Bags

At least four people have been killed and dozens of others have been injured by these defective air bags. Shrapnel flying towards the face and neck region of drivers and passengers is a deadly serious defect. Apparent stab wounds had investigators stumped in Orlando, Florida until they realized that the air bag was to blame in a crash that left Hein Tran dead. Only a week after she died from her injuries, she received a letter in the mail from Honda about faulty, potentially explosive air bags. Unfortunately, that letter was too late.

Delayed Safety Recalls

In September, the New York Times investigated why the recall took so long. They found that Honda and Takata Failed for years to take decisive action before issuing the recalls. Sadly, this story sounds familiar. This botched and delayed recall of a dangerous and deadly defective part is reminiscent of the General Motors ignition switch fiasco.

Checking for Recall Information

Consumers are encouraged to check their car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) periodically to search for recall information. If you’re worried about your car, contact the manufacturer directly. In many cases, recalls don’t happen soon enough, so if you think a faulty or defective product was responsible for your injury, contact an experienced personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. Risperdal and Gynecomastia

Risperdal and the generic form Risperidone are atypical antipsychotic drugs that are often prescribed to treat certain mental and mood disorders like autism, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, they’re linked with a wide variety of serious side effects including male breast growth or gynecomastia. While male children and adults are supposedly being treated for mood and mental disorders, they’re developing breast tissue that resembles that of a woman’s breasts.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is defined by the Mayo Clinic is a swelling of breast tissue in boys or men. This condition, which is a side effect of the drug Risperdal, leaves boys and men with the appearance of having woman-like breasts. Although it happens more commonly in young and adolescent boys, it can also happen to adult men. Gynecomastia can impact one breast or both breasts, and sometimes tissue is unevenly distributed. In some cases, the condition is also accompanied by pain in the breasts.

Emotional and Psychological Damage

Undoubtedly, the most difficult part of living with gynecomastia is the emotional and psychological damage that it inflicts on sufferers. In addition to directly impacting a boy’s self esteem, research has shown that gynecomastia is also linked with significant deficits in mental health, general health, social functioning and eating behaviors.

Surgical Intervention

There are options for victims. Not all cases resolve when patients stop taking Risperdal or Risperidone, so many times, surgical intervention is necessary. Typically, two different procedures can be utilized for men and boys with gynecomastia. First, there is liposuction, in which a small incision is made and fatty tissue is vacuumed out. Second, there is excision, which requires the cutting out of breast tissue. In many cases, to get the best and most normal looking results, doctors will do both procedures, sometimes in more than one visit.

Additional Potential Side Effects of Risperdal and Risperidone

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Muscle spasms
  • A rise in blood sugar which can cause diabetes
  • A rise in cholesterol
  • Inability to produce sperm
  • Unwanted breast milk
  • Seizures
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
  • Tardive dyskinesia

When to Contact a Lawyer

Gynecomastia caused by Risperdal or Risperidone isn’t something anybody should have to live with, especially boys and men who are already being treated for certain mental and mood disorders. Patients need to know that they have options. If you have suffered from this type of injury, contact Altman Legal Group at 940-761-4000 today.
