Grass Fire In Jack, Clay and Archer County Destroys Homes and Land in Texoma

A grass fire in Jack, Clay and Archer Counties has burned more than 2,100 acres across North Texas. According to KFDX News Channel Three, approximately 140 firefighters were on the scene Monday night trying to contain the blaze, and they didn’t expect to have it contained by Tuesday morning. As of the latest report, at least two homes and one unoccupied structure were lost to the fire. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported with this grass fire, which started just south of Windthorst. At this time, initial investigative reports indicate that electrical lines may be to blame for the grass fire.

Family Homestead Hit by Texoma Grass Fire

KFDX News Channel Three also interviewed a family whose land had been hit by the fire. Jacob Levin’s family has been living on their 80-acre homestead for generations. The fire even destroyed a house built in the 1800s that his grandparents lived in. Their family is reportedly just thankful nobody was hurt, and that the fire did not reach oil tanks on their property. While firefighters were still fighting to contain the blaze this morning, preliminary sources say the fire started from electric lines that may not have been properly maintained.

House Fires in Texoma

Over the past week, there have been multiple house fires across Texoma. A grass fire near Lake Kickapoo destroyed a home, and an explosion in an Archer City trailer sent a man through his back door and into his yard. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported in either case, but both properties were totally destroyed.

Lake Kickapoo House Fire

Last Tuesday night, crews spent hours fighting a fire at a home near Lake Kickapoo. KFDX News Channel Three reports that the fire started sometime before 11:00 p.m., at Turtle Creek Road and North Lake Road. Holliday Fire crews were initially called out due to a grass fire. When they arrived on the scene, a house was on fire. Thankfully, no one was living in the house at the time of the fire, and no injuries have been reported. Although they were on the scene for over two hours fighting the blaze, the house was a total loss.

Archer City Explosion

On Monday night, a man in Archer City was blown into his backyard when an explosion in his trailer occurred. The man was asleep when he heard a loud noise and smelled smoke. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the explosion and fire happened in the 500 block of North Oak Street, sometime before 11:30 p.m. At this time, very few details have been released, but the victim was reportedly doing okay after the fire. Initial reports indicate that five to six thousand rounds of ammunition in the trailer could have played a role in the explosion. The structure was a total loss, and the fire is likely still under investigation with authorities.

Burn Ban Lifted in Wichita County

Thanks to recent rain in the Texoma area, officials in Wichita County have lifted the two-year long countywide burn ban. KFDX News Channel Three reported on the recent decision. This will allow residents to finally burn some unwanted brush and tend small fires on their property. It’s important to note that even though the ban has been lifted, residents need to be as careful as ever when tending to fires on their property.

County Officials Warn of Fire Danger

Although the burn ban is being lifted, Woody Gossom, Wichita County Judge, wants residents to know that there is still a threat. County officials are quick to point out that residents shouldn’t be fooled by all of the green foliage, brush burning or fires of any kind can be dangerous if not properly tended and watched. Even though the leaves have turned green, they can still become fuel for out-of-control fires.

Preparing For a Safe Burn

It only takes an instant of inattention for a fire to burn out of control. You need to be with your fire at all times. Residents have to remain with their fires for safe and positive control. If you have a fire going, it needs to be your top priority. Equally important, is having the necessary water and fire extinguishing supplies nearby and ready.

Texoma Counties Where Burn Bans Have Been Lifted

  • Montague
  • Clay
  • Jack
  • Young
  • Archer
  • Throckmorton
  • Wilbarger
  • Foard
  • Knox
  • Wichita

Additional Burn Restrictions in Texoma Counties

At this time, residents in Baylor County are required to call dispatch before and after conducting controlled burns. Also, there must be a person with the fire at all times, and they must also have ample water and fire extinguishing equipment at the ready. Finally, they can only burn when winds are below 10 miles per hour. In Hardeman County, residents have to get permission from local fire departments and alert the Sheriff’s office and their neighbors prior to burning.

Property damage due to somebody else’s negligence can leave you with damaged grazing land, destroyed fences, permanently damaged land, a loss of cattle producing and a number of other costly problems. If you have suffered from a burn injury or property damage due to somebody else’s fire or prescribed burn, contact the skilled team at the Altman Legal Group at (940) 761-4000 for a free case consultation.

Earlier this week, a grass fire broke out near Walters, Oklahoma. According to KSWO ABC News Channel Seven, the fire broke out sometime around 2:00 p.m. on Elevator Road. Crews were swiftly on the scene, but at least two square miles of grassland burned. Thankfully, first responders were able to save two homes that were in danger of catching fire. The fire apparently started on the north side of a field and quickly spread. Elevator Road had to be closed as crews worked the scene and monitored the area’s hot spots.

Oklahoma Grass Fire Extinguished

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and the homes that were threatened by the fire were saved. Very few details have been released about this Oklahoma grass fire. At the time of the news report, authorities had not yet determined the cause of the fire, which is likely still under investigation. There’s no word on whether or not any non-residential structures like barns or sheds were damaged or if any fencing was destroyed.

Electrical Fire in Altus

On Thursday evening, an electrical fire displaced a family in Altus, Oklahoma. The incident happened on the 700 block of Judy Avenue. According to KSWO Channel Seven News, the tenant, Christie Harper, and her family were not home when the fire started. Harper was called, but arrived on the scene too late to do anything about the blaze. She shares the home with her 15-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter who is expecting a baby. First responders were able to put the fire out, but not before it caused extensive damage to the home.

Fire Started in Electrical Outlet

The fire appeared to have started in an electrical outlet in what was going to be the new baby’s nursery. Thankfully, the family was not in the house at the time of the fire, but they did lose all of their Christmas gifts, and items for the new baby. They lost baby clothes, laptop computers and a variety of other essential household items and Christmas gifts. At the time KSWO Channel Seven News reported on the story, Harper’s daughter was being rushed to the hospital for delivery.

Faulty Electrical Outlets

Although very few details have been released about how the electrical outlet could have caught fire, one thing is for certain. The Harper family sustained considerable property damage and loss as a result of the fire. Faulty electrical outlets can be extremely dangerous. Whether anyone is home or not, a small electrical fire can quickly turn into a large dangerous blaze. If you suspect faulty wiring or a defective electrical outlet was to blame for a fire in your house, you need to speak with a fire damage attorney as soon as possible.

Property Damage Due to a Fire

Renters and homeowners alike can sustain severe property damage and loss after electrical fires in the home. Even with insurance, it can be incredibly difficult to recover, replace and rebuild after a house fire. The holidays are an especially difficult time to deal with property damage and loss too.

When to Call a Fire Damage Attorney

Whether you’ve suffered partial damage to the home or a total loss of the property, an electrical fire can uproot your life in an instant. If you have suffered property damage or loss due to a house fire in Texoma, contact the skilled fire damage team at the Altman Legal Group for a free case consultation today.

Trailer and Barn Fire in Iowa Park

Earlier this week, a trailer and a barn burned down in the Iowa Park area. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the fire started sometime before midnight, in the 2400 block of FM 367. Deputies, first responders and firefighters with the local fire and police departments were swiftly on the scene, where the barn and RV trailer home were already fully engulfed by flames. Very few details have been released about this fire. Thankfully, no injuries were immediately reported, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation with authorities.

House Fire in Wichita Falls

Just last month, we reported on a house fire that displaced a family in Wichita Falls. The fire was thought to have started somewhere in the attic, and 17 firefighting and law enforcement units worked to contain the blaze. Thankfully, the two people inside of the home and their dog were able to get out of the house before it was completely engulfed in flames.

‘Tis the Season for House Fire Safety

With dipping temperatures, more families are looking to space heaters to warm their homes. Unfortunately, space heaters accounted for about one third of all home heater fires from 2007 to 2011. The National Fire Protection Association has a variety of tips for safely using space heaters during the cold weather. Consumers are always encouraged to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If you think your space heater is defective, contact the manufacturer immediately, and if a faulty space heater caused a fire in your home, call an experienced personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.

Recovering From a House Fire

The holiday season can be an especially difficult time to recover from a house fire. Even if you and your family escaped without injury, you could be looking at serious property damage or a total loss of your home. In most cases, it’s impossible to even grab a few essential items or heirlooms on the way out the door. You literally escape with the clothes on your back.

When to Contact a Fire Damage Lawyer

If you have been injured in a fire due to a defective space heater, you need to speak with a personal injury lawyer who has fire damage experience as soon as possible. It may be necessary to conduct additional investigative efforts to determine the cause of the fire, so the sooner you speak with an attorney, the better.

Fire Destroys Three Buildings in Chillicothe

A fire in Chillicothe destroyed three buildings on Monday, including an antique store and a drycleaner. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. on the corner of FM 91 and US 287, in downtown Chillicothe. Two workers and the owner of the antique store were in the buildings when the fire started. Thankfully, all three of them were able to escape.

Between 80 and 100 Firefighters on the Scene

At this time, officials suspect that the two workers were welding on a tank, located behind the antique store and drycleaner, which may have contained a liquid or powder substance that caught fire. Firefighters and first responders from Chillicothe, Vernon and Quanah were on the scene battling the flames for hours. The three buildings that were burned down included the antique store, a drycleaner and a building that was being used for storage.

House Fire in Wichita Falls

This isn’t the only North Texas fire in the past week. Last Friday, a fire broke out in a Wichita Falls home and sent one man to the hospital with third degree burns. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the fire broke out at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday evening in the 4700 block of Hollandale Avenue. Although firefighters were on the scene, the fire did spread to a neighbor’s house. At this time, there’s no word on what caused the fire, which is likely still under investigation.

Determining the Cause of a Fire

Whether you’re recovering from a burn injury or facing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in fire damage, the first step in recovering compensation is determining the cause of a fire. Since burn injury and fire damage cases are time sensitive, it’s absolutely essential to get an experienced fire damage lawyer on your side as soon as possible. Making sure the scene is thoroughly and exhaustively investigated is the first step in determining who is at fault.

Brush Fire near Petrolia Burns 400 Acres

Last week, a brush fire near Petrolia burned about 400 acres of land. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the fire started sometime before 4:00 p.m., last Thursday near FM 2393. Firefighters were swiftly on the scene, and it took over two hours to contain the flames. Thankfully, the fire didn’t jump the road, but an estimated 400 acres were destroyed.

Texas Firefighters on the Scene for Hours

Firefighters were on hand until late Thursday night, keeping an eye on the remaining hot spots. Very little information has been released about the cause of this fire, which is still under investigation with authorities.

The Dangers of Brush Fires

Even when no structures or homes are damaged, grass and brush fires can be incredibly dangerous and damaging. With record-setting droughts, it doesn’t take long for a tiny brush fire to quickly burn out of control. The importance of firefighters gaining control of a brush fire swiftly can’t be overstated, even if it’s just pastureland, as far as the eye can see.

Dealing with the Aftermath of a Grass Fire

While some people may be breathing a sigh of relief because a fire was extinguished without destroying any homes or structures, it’s critical to remember that an estimated 400 acres were burned. These 400 acres could be a local rancher’s livelihood. A grass fire can destroy grazing land for cattle, which can impact a rancher’s bottom line for years to come. Burned fencing can cost thousands of dollars to replace and rebuild, and the reseeding costs for charred grazing land can be astronomical.

Brush Fires and Grass Fires

Determining the cause of a brush or grass fire is a top priority for investigators. Because fires can be incredibly damaging and costly for property owners, it’s essential to determine exactly how a fire got started. This is the first step in recovering compensation for the damages associated with a grass fire, which can include permanent loss of value of the land, a loss of cattle production, loss of grazing land, reseeding costs and fence mending expenses.

After a Brush Fire on Your Property

If you have suffered from property loss or destroyed grazing lands due to a brush fire, contact an experienced fire damage attorney as soon as possible. Cases are time sensitive, and the sooner an experienced investigator can examine the scene, the better. Contact the skilled fire damage lawyers at Altman Legal Group today at 940-761-4000 with questions about your case.

Distracted Driver Causes Two-Acre Grass Fire

Last week, a one-vehicle crash involving a distracted driver set a field on fire in Comanche County, Oklahoma. The incident happened at about 1:00 p.m. on Highway seven. According to KSWO News Channel Seven, the driver of a black sedan was texting on his cell phone prior to the crash. He apparently looked up from his phone and then swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway.

His automobile crashed into a fence and the fire started. It swiftly spread through two acres of grass and nearly reached a residential structure. Thankfully, neighbors were on hand with hoses as Cox’s Store Volunteer firefighters fought the blaze. In addition to about two acres of grass being destroyed and damaged fencing, a car and a motorcycle were also destroyed in the fire. Currently, there’s no word on the condition of the driver or whether or not any citations were made in connection with the crash and fire.

Texting While Driving

Thankfully, the fire was contained before it got to the home, and there were no reports of serious injuries associated with this wreck. Anytime a driver takes his or her attention away from the road, there is an extremely high risk for danger. It’s common to hear about crashes where distracted drivers cross over the centerline and strike other cars head on.

Distracted Driving Facts

  • In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers.
  • An estimated 421,000 people were injured in distracted driving crashes in 2012.
  • 10 percent of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the wreck.
  • Drivers in their 20’s make up 27 percent of distracted drivers in fatal crashes.

Property Damage Claims

In this type of case, a property owner can make a claim against the property damage portion of an auto policy. Since the burned grass and damaged fence happened due to the reckless behavior of the driver, the property owner can collect for damages associated with the crash, including damage that occurred as a result of the fire.

If you have suffered from fire-related property damage due to somebody else’s negligent, careless or willful behavior, contact the skilled team at the Altman Legal Group for a free case consultation.
