A Christmas-day crash sent one woman to the hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma. This collision, which involved a car and a sport utility vehicle (SUV), trapped a woman behind the wheel, as her family looked on. The wreck happened at the intersection of northwest Euclid and 8th Street at about 3:30 p.m. on Christmas day. According to KSWO Channel Seven News, an SUV was headed westbound on Euclid and failed to yield at an intersection. The SUV then clipped a car that was travelling northbound on 8th street. The car spun out of control and struck at least one parked car. The driver was trapped until one of the cars could be moved. She was swiftly taken to a Lawton hospital for treatment of injuries.
Failure to Yield Crashes
There are many different types of ‘failure-to-yield’ situations that can lead to devastating collisions. Failing to stop at a stop sign or failing to observe traffic signals can put other drivers on the road at serious risk. Pedestrians and bicyclists are at an especially high risk when drivers fail to yield, since they don’t have the benefit of automobile safety features like airbags and seat belts. Roadways can only be safe when everybody observes the signs, signals, traffic patterns and laws. Listed below are a few of the common places where irresponsible drivers sometimes fail to yield.
Common Failure-to-Yield Areas
- Left turns
- Traffic signals
- Crosswalks
- Stop signs
- Yielding to pedestrians and bicyclists
- Parking lots and private drives
- Emergency vehicles
- Merging
Terral Woman Trapped After Crash
In July, we reported on a similar crash where a woman was trapped in a car. She was struck by a driver who failed to stop at a stop sign. Although no information was released on why the driver didn’t stop at the stop sign, it’s common for driver inattention to be a factor in two-vehicle crashes. Driver inattention can happen as a result of a number of factors too, including texting while driving.
There is no word on the woman’s current condition or the full extent of her injuries. Additionally, no information has been released on why the driver of the SUV failed to yield at the intersection. Could distracted driving have been a factor? Law enforcement officials are likely still investigating this crash to determine why the driver didn’t yield. The team at the Altman Legal Group wishes the victim a speedy and full recovery.
