Winter Weather Crashes in Texoma

Dozens of wrecks are being blamed on winter weather across Texoma this week. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the wrecks began just after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon and continued throughout the evening. Some cars were reportedly spinning in circles on the icy roadways. A few people had to be transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, and tow-truck drivers were out in full force well into the night.

Vehicles Crashing on Central Freeway and Kell East

A multi-car crash on Central Freeway, near North 9th Street, sent three people to the hospital sometime after 4:00 p.m. Law enforcement officials had to patrol a stretch of Central Freeway near the Scotland Park exit for hours as drivers tried to navigate the area.

Very few details have been released, but KFDX News Channel Three also reported that a tractor-trailer tipped over and slid onto its side. It’s unclear whether any other vehicles were involved in that collision, or if anybody was injured.

Crash Involving a Police Car

In addition to the dozens of collisions involving cars, trucks, big rigs and SUVS happening across Texoma during this winter weather, there was also a crash involving a police car. Apparently, the driver of a grey sedan was unable to stop in time and struck a parked police car.

The driver was actually pinned in the vehicle, but emergency crews were swiftly on the scene to get her out. She was rushed to the hospital for treatment of a head injury. Although there’s no word on her condition, there were also two children inside of the vehicle at the time. Law enforcement officers had to request the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) and city crews to spread sand and ice chat on the slippery roadways.

Winter Weather Safety

Drivers are encouraged to avoid taking to the roads in bad weather, if at all possible. In addition to reduced visibility, motorists could be facing icy roadways and drivers who aren’t safely observing the weather and adjusting their driving techniques to the conditions.
