On Tuesday afternoon, at least four people were injured in a multi-car crash involving a semi truck. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the incident happened some time after 3:00 p.m., near Iowa Park Road. Apparently, what was initially a prescribed burn between Peterson and Bell Roads made its way to Highway 287 and then crossed the road. There was heavy smoke in the area around Rifle Range Road when a multi-car collision occurred.
18-Wheeler Involved in 287 Crash
Although very few details about the crash have been released, KFDX News Channel Three reports that a midsize car struck the back of a pickup truck. The car was then rear-ended by a semi truck, which caused it to burst into flames. Even with multiple injuries, the victims were able to escape the wreckage. Thankfully as of yesterday, the injured victims had all been released from the hospital.
Roadway Conditions and Safety Behind the Wheel
Just like with heavy snowfall, rain, hail, fog or any other type of adverse weather condition, smoke can impact a driver’s visibility. Drivers need to adjust their speed safely to the outside conditions. Visibility is absolutely essential for safety behind the wheel, and if you can’t see, you need to pull over and wait for conditions to clear. Drivers should never head into smoke so thick that they can’t safely navigate the roadway. Reduced visibility means you won’t have enough time to see or stop in the event of an emergency. If a car is stopped in front of you, or if the person in front of you is driving a little slower, you might not notice in time, and that could cause a wreck.
Truck Accidents in Texoma
Although quite remarkably, everybody in the 287 18-wheeler crash survived, those who were injured will likely be facing lengthy recoveries from their injuries. Crashes involving large commercial trucks can leave victims severely injured, or worse. Even under the best conditions, big rigs take longer to stop than smaller passenger occupant vehicles. Proper brake maintenance, adequate distance between vehicles and driving the right speed for conditions are all essential elements for roadway safety.
