Back to School Safety in Texoma

Millions of kids across Texas are going back to school this month, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) is reminding drivers and children how to stay safe on in school zones. In 2013, 625 traffic crashes happened in Texas school zones, resulting in two deaths and 112 serious injuries. More than 100 of those crashes happened in August and September alone. Not only is the TXDOT focusing on school bus and crosswalk safety, they’re also reminding drivers about the importance of navigating school zones safely. Listed below are the TXDOT’s top safety tips for motorists driving in school zones.

Driving Safely in School Zones

  • Put your cell phone down.
  • Always obey posted school zone speed limits.
  • Drop off and pickup kids in designated areas only.
  • Watch out for children gathered at bus stops.
  • Be alert for children who might dart across the street on their way to school.
  • Remain vigilant, and never engage in distracted driving behaviors.

Car Accidents in School Zones

Most school zone car accidents are totally preventable. The TXDOT reports that some of the most common causes for car accidents in school zones are driver inattention, failure to control speed and failure to yield the right-of-way at stop signs. Not only are drivers putting the lives of children and other motorists at risk, they’re also risking expensive tickets and fines. In Texas, cell phone use is banned in active school zones, and violators could face fines of up to $200 if caught.

Tips for Students

  • Only cross at intersections and designated crosswalks.
  • Look left, right and left again before crossing streets.
  • Look for traffic when stepping off of a bus or from behind parked cars.
  • Before crossing the street, make eye contact with drivers.
  • Always obey crossing guards and bus drivers.
  • Always wear a helmet when bicycling to and from school.
