With the Hotter’N Hell Hundred swiftly approaching, the topic of bicycle safety needs to be a top priority in Wichita Falls and across Texoma. Motorists and cyclists alike can do their part to keep cyclists and all roadway users safe. • The number of cyclists killed each year has increased 19-percent since 2010.

Other Ways to Improve Bicyclist Safety in Texoma

Cyclists can improve their personal safety by wearing helmets every time they ride. Additionally, bright clothing, reflectors and flashing lights can also improve visibility. Cyclists should also familiarize themselves with the rules of the road and always observe posted signs and signals. Unfortunately, even the most safety-conscious cyclists can become catastrophically or fatally injured when drivers aren’t paying attention.

What Can Motorists Do?

Drivers need to put down the distractions and share the road with cyclists, pedestrians, motorcycle riders and all other roadway users. Cyclists don’t have the same safety protections as passenger vehicle occupants, so they’re counting on drivers to stay in their lanes, drive predictably, give them room and safely share the road. It’s up to everybody to keep the roadways safe.

Bicycle Accidents in Texoma

Although we typically hear the term “bicycle accident” after somebody has been hit by a driver, it’s important to remember that most collisions are not accidental occurrences at all.
