Burn Ban Lifted in Wichita County

Thanks to recent rain in the Texoma area, officials in Wichita County have lifted the two-year long countywide burn ban. KFDX News Channel Three reported on the recent decision. This will allow residents to finally burn some unwanted brush and tend small fires on their property. It’s important to note that even though the ban has been lifted, residents need to be as careful as ever when tending to fires on their property.

County Officials Warn of Fire Danger

Although the burn ban is being lifted, Woody Gossom, Wichita County Judge, wants residents to know that there is still a threat. County officials are quick to point out that residents shouldn’t be fooled by all of the green foliage, brush burning or fires of any kind can be dangerous if not properly tended and watched. Even though the leaves have turned green, they can still become fuel for out-of-control fires.

Preparing For a Safe Burn

It only takes an instant of inattention for a fire to burn out of control. You need to be with your fire at all times. Residents have to remain with their fires for safe and positive control. If you have a fire going, it needs to be your top priority. Equally important, is having the necessary water and fire extinguishing supplies nearby and ready.

Additional Burn Restrictions in Texoma Counties

At this time, residents in Baylor County are required to call dispatch before and after conducting controlled burns. Also, there must be a person with the fire at all times, and they must also have ample water and fire extinguishing equipment at the ready. Finally, they can only burn when winds are below 10 miles per hour. In Hardeman County, residents have to get permission from local fire departments and alert the Sheriff’s office and their neighbors prior to burning.

Electrical Fire in Altus

On Thursday evening, an electrical fire displaced a family in Altus, Oklahoma. The incident happened on the 700 block of Judy Avenue. According to KSWO Channel Seven News, the tenant, Christie Harper, and her family were not home when the fire started. Harper was called, but arrived on the scene too late to do anything about the blaze. She shares the home with her 15-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter who is expecting a baby. First responders were able to put the fire out, but not before it caused extensive damage to the home.

Fire Started in Electrical Outlet

The fire appeared to have started in an electrical outlet in what was going to be the new baby’s nursery. Thankfully, the family was not in the house at the time of the fire, but they did lose all of their Christmas gifts, and items for the new baby. They lost baby clothes, laptop computers and a variety of other essential household items and Christmas gifts. At the time KSWO Channel Seven News reported on the story, Harper’s daughter was being rushed to the hospital for delivery.

Faulty Electrical Outlets

Although very few details have been released about how the electrical outlet could have caught fire, one thing is for certain. The Harper family sustained considerable property damage and loss as a result of the fire. Faulty electrical outlets can be extremely dangerous. Whether anyone is home or not, a small electrical fire can quickly turn into a large dangerous blaze. If you suspect faulty wiring or a defective electrical outlet was to blame for a fire in your house, you need to speak with a fire damage attorney as soon as possible.

Fire Damage in Texoma

In the past few weeks, Texoma residents have seen their fair share of house fires. Even when the residents are able to escape in time, house fires can be absolutely devastating. In addition to what can be the total loss of one’s home, victims of fire damage can lose their possessions or pets left inside too.

In many cases, smoke, fire and water damage can mean personal items and valuables are totally destroyed. A house fire in Burkburnett and another one in Lawton had local firefighters busy during the past couple of weeks. Earlier this month, we reported on the fire at the Faith Mission storage house too.

Lawton Fire Destroys Elderly Couple’s Home

Two weeks ago, a fire in Lawton destroyed an elderly couple’s home. According to KSWO News Channel Seven, the fire happened at around 7:00 p.m. on Southwest 13th street, south of Lee Boulevard. Witness reports indicate that there may have been some sort of explosion involved.

First responders had to close down a large area of the neighborhood to traffic while they extinguished the flames. Smoke from the house fire was reportedly seen for miles around. Thankfully, the couple was able to get out of their home in time. The cause of this fire is still under investigation with authorities.

Burkburnett House Fire

Earlier this week, a fire caused extensive damage to a house in Burkburnett. The fire happened on Tuesday afternoon on Gilbert Road, on the east side of town. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the first started in the garage of the house and then spread.

Firefighters from multiple departments including Burkburnett, Friberg-Cooper and Sheppard Air Force Base were swiftly on the scene, where smoke was initially coming from the attic. The home reportedly suffered from major smoke and water damage. This cause of this fire is still under investigation.

After a House Fire in North Texas

Coping with the aftermath of a house fire is tough, to say the least. Victims are often temporarily or permanently displaced. They might not have a single possession left that wasn’t destroyed by fire, smoke or water. On top of everything, now they have to deal with a pushy insurance company that is slow to process claims. Speaking with an attorney after a house fire needs to be a top priority. An experienced fire damage lawyer can be your advocate during this difficult time.

Faith Mission Storage House Fire

Early Thursday morning, a fire broke out at a house on the 1200 Block of Austin Street.

According to KFDX News Channel Three, the two-story house was being used as a storage facility for Faith Mission. The house was already fully engulfed in flames when first responders arrived on the scene. It took 27 firefighters to put out this two-alarm fire.

At this time, fire officials do suspect foul play was involved, since the use of accelerants was detected. There’s no word on whether or not anybody was injured in this fire, or what the potential damages could be, but the structure was said to be a total loss. The cause of this fire is still under investigation with authorities.

Injuries and Damages Resulting from a Fire

Burn injuries and smoke inhalation are two of the most frequently seen injuries that occur after a structure fire. Hopefully, nobody was injured in this fire, since the building was used primarily as a storage facility.

In addition to the total loss of the structure, Faith Mission also presumably lost everything that they were storing in the building.

The damages involved with this type of structure fire could include total cost to repair or rebuild the house, cost to replace the items that were destroyed and a permanent loss of value to the property. There’s also no information on whether or not any neighboring structures were impacted by this fire.

Filing an Insurance Claim after a Fire

There’s no telling how long the investigation could take, but when foul play is suspected, filing an insurance claim can be complicated. Insurance companies are frequently in the business of taking care of their own bottom lines, so it’s important to make sure you get the compensation you rightfully deserve after a fire.

If you think your insurance company isn’t treating you in good faith, you need to contact an attorney with fire damage experience as soon as possible.

When to Contact an Attorney

If you or a loved one has been injured or suffered property damage due to a fire that was caused by somebody else’s negligent behavior or willful misconduct, you need to speak with an experienced fire damage lawyer swiftly. The sooner you speak with an attorney, the better. Insurance companies can be pushy and slow to pay out on claims, and an attorney can be your advocate as you begin to rebuild your life after a fire.
