Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Wichita Falls

On Saturday afternoon, a hit-and-run driver fatally struck a Wichita Falls resident. According to KFDX News Channel Three, 64-year-old Connie Merrell was riding her bicycle on North Beverly when she was struck by a grey or silver sedan. Although she was rushed to the hospital, she died as a result of her injuries on Saturday night. Her family is calling on anybody with information about the hit-and-run driver to come forward.

Police are Looking for a Silver or Grey Sedan

Witnesses report that the hit-and-run driver didn’t slow down or attempt to slam on the breaks. He or she may have even accelerated to get away. This terrible incident is still under investigation with the Wichita Falls Police Department. They’re looking for a silver or grey sedan with possible damage to the front end, hood and roof. Merrell was on her purple and white bicycle at the time of the wreck, and witnesses rushed to the scene.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Wrecks

In the event of a wreck, bicyclists and pedestrians do not have the same protections as motorists. They don’t have seat belts, steel cages, side-curtain airbags or enormous safety-rated vehicles to protect them. At best, they have helmets and other protective gear to mitigate potential injuries and damage. Unfortunately, even when bicyclists are following the rules of the road, wearing protective gear and practicing safe riding techniques, a distracted, impaired or careless driver can seriously injure or kill them.

Wrongful Death

Anytime another person’s negligent, careless or willfully dangerous act leads to the death of another person, the surviving family members do have legal recourse. A case where a crime was committed and a suspect is still at large can be difficult for families to pursue, so it’s important to speak with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible to discuss options.

Looking Out for Pedestrians and Cyclists

It’s up to drivers to lookout for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcycles. Making a commitment to distraction-free driving is absolutely critical in keeping roadways safe for bicyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians and other roadway users.

Anybody with information about the hit-and-run driver or car is asked to contact the Wichita Falls Police Department’s front desk at 940-761-7792 or contact Crime Stoppers at 940-322-9888 or 800-322-9888. The team at the Altman Legal Group sends their deepest heartfelt condolences to the family members, friends and loved ones of Connie Merrell.
