Cyclist Fatalities Across The Nation

With the Hotter’N Hell Hundred bicycle ride quickly approaching, cyclist safety needs to be an important topic for cyclists and drivers in Wichita Falls and across Texoma. A recent Vox Transportation article reported on detailed data collected about bicycle crash fatalities across the country. Although the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) collects data on injury-causing and fatal crashes of all types, they’re information isn’t quite as detailed or specific as it could be. The League of American Bicyclists has been manually colleting data from various sources over the past few years to give a more detailed look at how and why fatal bicycle crashes occur.

The Data

Although the League of American Bicyclists’ information isn’t quite as comprehensive as the NHTSA’s, it’s certainly more detailed. For the year 2012, they’ve catalogued a little over three-quarters of the government’s total fatal bicycle crashes. Between February 2011 and February 2013, they made some pretty disturbing findings. As it turns out, rear-end collisions are, by and large, the number one cause of cyclist deaths across the country.

Fatal Rear-End Collisions

Even though rear-end crashes are a fairly small percentage of total collisions, they’re especially dangerous and deadly for cyclists. The League of American Bicyclists found that rear-end type collisions caused 40 percent of all cyclist fatalities in their study. These crashes are particularly devastating and catastrophic because drivers are often going high rates of speed and don’t see the cyclists prior to hitting them. They also found that careless driving is the top secondary factor in most bicyclist fatality crashes. Hit-and-run type crashes are also at the top of the list. Finally, they’ve found that most cyclist fatalities happen on high-traffic urban roads.

When to Call a Bicycle Accident Attorney

If you have been injured or if you have lost a loved one in a bicycle accident, you need to speak with a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. Cyclists are one of the more vulnerable roadway user groups. They simply don’t have the same protections as drivers and passengers in cars and trucks. Even with protective gear like helmets and gloves, cyclists can become catastrophically or fatally injured in crashes involving larger passenger occupant vehicles.

Hotter’N Hell Hundred Bike Safety

With the Hotter’N Hell Hundred swiftly approaching, the topic of bicycle safety needs to be a top priority in Wichita Falls and across Texoma. Motorists and cyclists alike can do their part to keep cyclists and all roadway users safe. More than just staying hydrated and practicing safe riding practices, cyclists need to make sure their bikes are in safe working order. KFDX News Channel Three recently reported on an upcoming event involving bicycle gear safety in Wichita Falls.

Bicycle Safety Inspections in Wichita Falls

This weekend, the Wichita Falls Bicycling Club and the Wichita County Medical Alliance are holding a bicycle gear safety check. Cyclists of all ages and skill levels are welcome. The event is going to be on Saturday, July 11, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Hotter’N Hell building, in downtown Wichita Falls, on 2nd Street and Scott Street. Interested participants are encouraged to arrive at 8:30 to register.

Bicycle Crash Statistics in The U.S.

  • In 2013, 743 cyclists were killed in traffic crashes.
  • An estimated 48,000 people were injured in bicycle crashes in 2013.
  • The number of cyclists killed each year has increased 19-percent since 2010.
  • 68 percent of all cyclists who died in crashes in 2013, died in urban area crashes.
  • The cyclist fatality rate per capita was almost seven times greater for males than females in 2013.

Other Ways to Improve Bicyclist Safety in Texoma

Cyclists can improve their personal safety by wearing helmets every time they ride. Additionally, bright clothing, reflectors and flashing lights can also improve visibility. Cyclists should also familiarize themselves with the rules of the road and always observe posted signs and signals. Unfortunately, even the most safety-conscious cyclists can become catastrophically or fatally injured when drivers aren’t paying attention.

What Can Motorists Do?

Drivers need to put down the distractions and share the road with cyclists, pedestrians, motorcycle riders and all other roadway users. Cyclists don’t have the same safety protections as passenger vehicle occupants, so they’re counting on drivers to stay in their lanes, drive predictably, give them room and safely share the road. It’s up to everybody to keep the roadways safe.
