Summer Driving Safety Tips

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is encouraging motorists to have safe travels this summer.

Although Texoma residents are veterans of driving in hot weather, there are a few important issues to consider before getting behind the wheel during the summer months. In addition to buckling up and practicing safe driving habits, motorists need to check their tires and make sure children are safe in and around vehicles.

The NHTSA’s top Summer Driving Safety Tips to keep you and your family safe.

  • Buckle up, every time. It doesn’t matter how far you’re going. Buckle up.
  • Never mix drinking and driving. Even one drink can be one drink too many in certain circumstances.
  • Check your tire’s air pressure, tread wear and spare before you head out on the road.
  • Keep children safe in and around automobiles. Never leave children unattended in cars, and always check around your car before pulling out of driveways and parking lots.

Safe Driving Habits

Although it’s the summer time and motorists are enjoying their family road trips and vacations, they should never take a vacation from wearing their seat belts. It doesn’t matter if you’re just taking a short trip down the street. Buckle up, every trip. Nothing can ruin a light and breezy summer quicker than a loved one in the hospital or worse, because they didn’t buckle up. Additionally, enjoy the backyard barbecues, but don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking. Be responsible, and designate a driver or make a plan to get home safely.

Be TireWise

It’s also important to make sure your tires are in good shape before heading out on the road this summer. Properly inflated tires can keep you safe and save you money at the pump. Check your tread wear too, and make sure you spare is ready, just in case.

Keeping Children Safe this Summer

Don’t forget that children are out of school for the summer. Expect the unexpected, and always check around your car before backing out of a driveway or a parking lot to avoid dangerous and fatal back over accidents. Finally, never leave a child unattended in a car. Children are especially susceptible to heat stroke and can overheat in minutes in a hot car. The team at the Altman Legal Group wishes everybody happy and safe summer travels.
