Buckle Up to Save Your Giblets

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing their annual seat belt safety campaign for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Thanksgiving isn’t just one of the most traveled weekends of the year, it’s also one of the deadliest weekends of the year. The “Buckling Up Could Save Your Giblets” safety campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of buckling up. This time of year is notorious for injury causing and fatal crashes, and nothing is more tragic than an injury or death that could have been prevented, especially during the holiday season. This year, the NHTSA is encouraging Americans to buckle up for every trip, every time.

Buckling Up Could Save Your Giblets

Buckling up your seat belt is the single most effective way to protect yourself in the event of a car accident. Don’t assume that because you have air bags you don’t need your seat belt. Seat belts and air bags work together to improve passenger occupant safety. Even if you’re not traveling across country this year, it’s essential to buckle up. Whether you’re driving across town or across Texas, buckle up for every trip. It could save your giblets. Parents and caregivers are also encouraging to ensure children are properly restrained with age and size-appropriate car seats and booster seats.

Thanksgiving Weekend Crash Statistics

  • During the Thanksgiving weekend in 2013, 301 people were killed in car crashes in the U.S.
  • 58 percent of those people killed were not using their seat belts at the time of the crash.
  • Over the 2013 Thanksgiving weekend, 64 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes at night were unbuckled.
  • Over the last decade, more than 100,000 lives have been saved by seat belts in the U.S.

Slippery Roadway Conditions in Texoma

Wintry weather is being blamed for slippery roadways across Texoma this week. Early Monday morning, an SUV rolled over on Central Freeway at Airport road. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the incident happened at about 1:30 a.m. Apparently, the driver of a 2003 Lincoln Navigator lost control of the vehicle on an overpass. The SUV struck a guardrail and then rolled over on its side.

Adjusting Speed For Roadway Conditions

Thankfully, no injuries were immediately reported in that crash. Law enforcement officials did report that speed could have been a factor in the rollover wreck. When roadway conditions deteriorate, it’s up to drivers to adjust their speed. It may not always be safe to drive the posted speed limit in certain types of weather conditions. Especially when freezing temperatures are involved, drivers should adjust their speed accordingly. Additionally, it’s also important to remember that bridges and overpasses freeze before other parts of the roadway.

Dangerous Driving Weather

With Texoma’s characteristic wintry weather, drivers in Wichita Falls are encouraged to navigate the roadways safely. If you can, stay home during inclement weather. The fewer cars out on the roads, the safer they will be. If you have to drive during bad weather, remember to slow down and exercise additional caution behind the wheel. Allow plenty of room for cars in front of you also, in case of emergency.

Bridges and Overpasses Freeze First

Extra caution should be exercised when driving over bridges and overpasses. It’s true that they freeze first. Bridges and overpasses are exposed to cold air on all sides and can freeze quickly in bad weather. Bridges could be frozen slick long before the roads start deteriorating, so slow down and exercise caution when crossing overpasses and bridges in cold weather.

Fatal One-Car Crash in Wichita Falls

Last Friday night, a one-car crash took the life of a well-known Wichita Falls community member. Marvin “Fat” McBride was headed westbound on FM 3393 when his truck left the roadway and crashed. According to KFDX News Channel Three, the 2003 Toyota Tundra veered right and struck several culverts. The truck went airborne and landed on its roof. The truck skidded across the roadway before coming to a stop. McBride was pronounced dead on the scene, and there’s still no word on what caused the truck to leave the roadway.

McBride, whose family was responsible for opening several popular restaurants in town, was 85 years old. Initial reports indicate that he may not have been wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. The cause of this crash is likely still under investigation with local law enforcement authorities.

Fatal Crashes in Texas

  • In 2013, 3,377 people died in car crashes across the state.
  • In 2013, one person was killed every two hours and 36 minutes on Texas roadways.

Seatbelt Safety in North Texas

Buckling your seatbelt is the number one most effective way to protect yourself in the event of a crash, but one in five Americans still fail to buckle up regularly. Seatbelt usage needs to be top priority for drivers and passengers in North Texas and across the State. In addition to proper restraints and car seat usage for children, adults should set a good example by always buckling up. Whether you’re traveling cross-country or across town, it doesn’t matter how far you’re going. Buckle up for every trip. Your life depends on it.

Fatal Wreck on Lloyd Ruby Overpass

On Wednesday afternoon, a fatal wreck involving a semi truck took the life of a 68-year-old Vernon resident.

The three-vehicle crash happened on Central Freeway on the Lloyd Ruby Overpass. According to KFDX News Channel Three, a Chevy S10 pickup truck stalled out in the center lane of the roadway. The S10 driver’s wife was also traveling on Central Freeway in a Chevy Cavalier. She pulled up behind her husband’s stalled vehicle and turned her hazard lights on, in efforts to warn oncoming traffic.

Sadly, a semi truck slammed into the back of the Cavalier, which then struck the S10. Roberta Gidney, 68-years-old of Vernon, was killed in the crash. She was still inside of her car at the time of the impact. Her husband was out of his truck and directing traffic when the semi-truck crashed into the car. According to KFDX News, he was able to move to safety when the collision happened. Initial reports also indicate that there was a dog inside of the Cavalier, and was alive when he was transported from the scene by the humane society.

Under Investigation

At this time, there’s no word on why the semi truck slammed into the Cavalier. Could it have been a case of distracted driving? Was the driver of the 18-wheeler speeding? As of yesterday afternoon, Officer Jeff Hughes with the Wichita Falls Police Department said that the crash was still under investigation. The roadway was closed and traffic had to be diverted, so investigators and crews could work the scene.

Wrecks Involving Semi Trucks

Crashes involving semi trucks can be incredibly complex, because of the many commercial trucking regulations involved. When 18-wheelers are involved in crashes, a variety of rules and regulations have to be considered. In addition to the traditional rules of the road and traffic laws, commercial truckers have an additional set of regulations to follow.

In some cases, it isn’t just the driver’s actions that have to be analyzed, but the commercial trucking company’s actions too. There are special regulations for a variety of different types of cargo too. Volatile chemicals and other dangerous loads have to be transported carefully to ensure public safety. An experienced wrongful death lawyer can help families get to the bottom of crashes involving semi trucks. The team at the Altman Legal Group sends their deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Roberta Gidney.
